In today's ever-evolving business landscape, the measure of success is a balance of wellbeing and financial gains; is this how you measure your business success? After coaching businesses for the past 3 years, I have found that genuine success and true sustainability are achieved by businesses, including sole traders, that cultivate wellbeing, advocate for ethical growth, and weave resilience into the very fabric of their operations, especially in the day-to-day activities of the business. As we navigate the tides of rapid change in the business landscape, including various legislations and requirements, along with the rising cost of living.
For sustainability, your business could adopt a holistic approach to wellbeing that harmonises strategic ambition with heartfelt purpose, which is emerging as the new benchmark of excellence.
Regardless of whether you are a sole trader, a medium-sized business, or a corporate company, wellbeing is an essential part of your business's sustainability.
1. Wellbeing as a Strategic Asset
Wellbeing looks different for every business, and size has a significant impact on it; however, progressive businesses recognise that prioritising wellbeing is not an indulgence, but rather an imperative part of business for success and sustainability. When businesses prioritise the wellbeing of their workforce, they unlock a treasure trove of higher productivity, reduced turnover rates, and a more resilient team equipped to face challenges.
Staff always feel valued when their wellbeing is an integral part of the business, and this is demonstrated in the way they can be proactive. Many companies offer coaching sessions for their staff, which can cover a wide range of subjects that the person may like to discuss, not just work-related ones. The feedback is not typically fed back into the business. Others offer gym memberships, and many larger companies provide child care services, which can help staff balance their family and work responsibilities.
However, workplace wellbeing is more than that; it is about achieving a work-life balance and offering resources in the workplace that encourage self-care and balance, such as providing weekly meditation classes, team-building days, and inviting speakers to the workplace or hosting video calls with the team. Implementing a wellbeing program in your business is straightforward, and this is something I have enjoyed helping companies to develop with my background in health, fitness, and wellbeing.
Strategic Tip: Adopt policies that promote work-life integration rather than merely work-life balance. This might encompass flexible working hours, comprehensive mental health support, or creating serene, mindful spaces within the workplace where employees can recharge and refocus.
2. Purpose-Driven Culture
Businesses that articulate and convey a clear purpose tend to soar above those that remain vague about their mission. When employees and customers alike grasp the essence of a company's existence, beyond the pursuit of profit, they forge a stronger emotional connection and loyalty.
How does your business encourage a positive workplace culture that is also inclusive? More and more people are starting to speak up and let the company they work for that they require specific things in their work environment, such as noise cancelling headset, so when on the phone they can focus on the caller, a desk that is not under a bright light or even flexible hours and many business; can provide to this to their staff that makes being at work more accessible and inclusive for them.
Not all workplaces can be adapted, and workplace culture extends beyond the physical environment. Have you checked in with your staff recently to see how they are enjoying their job and asked for feedback, including their thoughts on the workplace culture?
Strategic Tip: Reevaluate Your Mission and Values. Are they prominently reflected in your daily operations and decision-making processes? Aligning core activities with a meaningful purpose cultivates trust and fosters enduring relationships with stakeholders.
3. Resilient Leadership
The demands of leadership today surpass mere strategic acumen; leaders are expected to encompass emotional intelligence, adaptability, and authenticity. Leaders who embody these qualities cultivate environments where creativity, innovation, and psychological safety can flourish.
What is the leadership like in your business? What is their leadership style that matches the company's requirements and the industry's expectations? Are they flexible in their communication styles with the staff to ensure inclusivity is an integral part of their approach?
Do your leaders accurately represent the business as well?
Strategic Tip: Invest in leadership development programs that prioritise empathy, effective communication, and conscious decision-making. A resilient leader inspires teams and navigates uncertainty with grace and clarity, fostering a culture of motivation and collaboration.
4. Eco-Conscious Operations
Embracing sustainability in business extends far beyond mere compliance; it is a mindset deeply ingrained in the corporate ethos. Today's consumers and employees are increasingly discerning, and their wellbeing often aligns with brands that champion environmental responsibility.
How does your business champion wellbeing in the workplace?
In some past jobs, we had wellbeing champions whose role was to promote wellbeing in the workplace and devise fun ways to connect the team with each other. I had the privilege of doing this for a while, and some of the activities we did involved the entire team, which was great. There was also some fun banter and encouragement. Other activities, however, some people chose not to engage in, were also encouraging and keen to hear how the activity was going.
Strategic Tip: Initiate small yet meaningful changes, such as reducing paper waste, sourcing materials from local vendors, or facilitating remote work opportunities, to lower your carbon footprint. Transparent communication about these efforts not only strengthens your brand's reputation but also deepens customer loyalty.
5. Human-Centred Innovation
Innovation must never come at the expense of wellbeing. Whether crafting a product, a service, or refining internal processes, it is essential to consider the human impact at each stage of development.
How do you determine if your staff are satisfied with their job and the people they work with? Does your organisation have an open-door policy, allowing team members to approach team leaders or managers with any concerns they may have, and do they feel welcome and supported in doing so?
If your business has an open-door policy, does it follow through on it? Having an open-door policy is one thing; however, implementing it is equally important.
Strategic Tip: Implement design thinking methodologies that incorporate user feedback, empathy mapping, and scenario planning to enhance the overall experience. To drive informed decision-making. These approaches help create solutions that are impactful, inclusive, and resonate deeply with wellbeing.
6. Community & Collaboration
No business can truly flourish in isolation. Nurturing strategic partnerships and engaging with the broader community amplifies impact and fosters mutual growth, cultivating an ecosystem of collaboration and support.
Is your business part of your local community?
Do you, as a business owner, meet with other businesses to explore potential collaborations?
Having a connection and community is essential. Remember that collaboration looks different to everyone, so approach it with an open mind and be clear about what you are agreeing to and your responsibilities. If people ask you to sign an agreement, read it carefully.
Strategic Tip: Seek avenues to collaborate across industries, champion local initiatives, or mentor burgeoning entrepreneurs. Such actions not only fortify community ties but also position your business as a powerful catalyst for positive change.
Conclusion: A New Definition of Success
In the contemporary business world, success is not solely defined by growth but by how we achieve that growth. It is also measured by the happiness of your staff and how they speak about your business. By embedding wellbeing into every aspect of your strategy, you empower individuals and fortify your business for the future. After all, this is the goal: longevity of the business with success and purpose.
As we collectively redefine what success means, let's aspire to build companies that thrive by uplifting people and the planet, not despite them.
Let's connect and embark on this journey together—growing with intention, compassion, and courage.
